Although the weather was still pretty hot - the start of the school year is the strongest signal that autumn is here. So, I moved back to Northville from Garden City.
It was rainy, the first few days or was it the first week - I was so busy at work that I have not kept track. I do remember watching rain pound the steel gray lake from my bed.
I love watching the lake from bed. This morning I watched the sunrise worked its way over the ridge across the lake - first, I watched from my bed then from the couch for a better view. The poplar trees in front of my bedroom window obscured the view. The colors of sunrise were magnificent - no words to describe it. I savored the scene, knowing that I will be missing it when the fall weather then winter are in full swing.
The water was dark but smooth like glass occasionally disturbed by the wild ducks enjoying their morning dip. Then our resident flock of Canadian geese decide in chorus to welcome the sun - so I went back to sleep on the couch.
Larry came about 8:00 for breakfast, walk and talk on Sunday mornings. We went to Joseph's in downtown Northville this time. Northville is a historic Victorian town - small but just right for me. There are really two communities - Northville (like poblacion Catmon) and Northville Township. There are no convenience stores or fast food restaurants in Northville.
We made our way to Hines Park and walked along the trails at Bennett Arboretum. It was a good walk - hilly and a bit chilly at first. We were both wearing sweatshirts for the first time but we did not take them off because of the nippy air that lasted until 10:00 AM. The trees in the arboretum are still very green. The arboretum is located in the highest point in Southeast Michigan, so they say. At the highest point of the hill, you can see the Renaissance Center in Detroit some twenty miles away on a very clear day!
Northville is designated to be a destination city without the tourist traps - lots of cafes - my favorite is the Tuscan Cafe, lots of pricey restaurants, pretty painted Victorian houses and other structures. The feature that attracted me the most are the people - very friendly and they still walk around town eating ice cream and such. There are lots and lots of green space around Northville.
The opening of the local cider mill, Parmenters Cider Mill, also signals the coming of autumn. I went to the mill yesterday to fill my craving for cold, freshly pressed apple cider and fresh warm dough nuts. Nothing like it - not factory made dough nut like Tim Hortons or Dunkin Donuts - but old fashioned donuts!
I will bring the grandchildren in the next couple of weeks but yesterday, was my day to sit by the river and enjoy the cider. The leaves in the trees are starting to turn - you can spot the occasional branch filled with yellow and gold or the occasional tree with crimson, orange and pink leaves. Some of the sumac have turned bright red.
This is a favorite time of year for me - after all the theme song with my one true love was "Autumn Leaves." It is the most beautiful time of year in Michigan anyway!
Just the same I am still not ready to put away my sandals and t-shirts - my summer weather uniforms.
