Woke up this morning to the news that Luciano Pavarotti died.
How can it be? He was ill and he was seventy one years old.
Although, I don't own any of his albums - I loved his music. I watched every PBS special - either he is the featured artist or he is performing with others. I loved to watch him - his voice was very congruent to his demeanor - he always seem to sing from his heart.
He was socially conscious - lending his fame and giving his fortune towards worthy causes. If only more successful people were like him. How much of a better would this world be?
During the time when I lived with Lola Bette in Catmon, she talked about Enrico Caruso a lot. She could not say enough about the greatness of his voice. I can not remember whether she actually saw or heard Caruso in person while she was here in Michigan.
Later, she loved Mario Lanza - not as good as Caruso mind you, but we saw every Mario Lanza movie. Lola Bette also liked Tio Pepe de Dios' rendition of "Because." For years, Tio Pepe was part of most of the programs at the plaza.
So this morning, I cried mourning Lola Bette and Luciano Pavarotti. His music will live on! And I can get DVDs. Lola didn't have those for Enrico Caruso and Mario Lanza - just her sweet memories.
